Zelma Aileen Young

August 17, 1924 — December 3, 2007

Zelma Aileen Young was born on Hamilton Creek, near Cabool, Missouri August 17, 1924, and passed away at her home, December 3, 2007, following a long illness, at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 17 days.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Henry Booker and Hetty Carter Booker, along with two sisters, Beatrice and Wilma Booker.
She was married to Eugene Walker Young on March 14, 1944, and they spent their entire life together in the Mountain Grove area, where they made many friends.
While in school, Zelma played in the Drum and Bugle Corps, and was a “Proof Reader” for the Cabool Enterprise newspaper. After graduation, she went to work for Producers Creamery as a Tester, and later worked for the Kraft Plant in Mountain Grove, Missouri.
She worked as a Bookkeeper for the Ford Garage in Mountain Grove, when owned by the late Fred Morris, and then spent 14 years as Chief Payroll Clerk for the Brown Shoe Company.
She then spent 40 years managing Young’s Insurance and Real Estate, which she and her husband started and owned together. She also did appraisals for the state of Missouri for the local Social Services office.
Zelma helped develop The Ozark Trails Board of Realtors, and was secretary for that organization. She was also the first Secretary of the Mountain Grove Community Betterment Association, and held this position for several years.
Zelma enjoyed her work and was very active in the local Business and Professional Women’s Club, holding every office at one time or another. She was on the State Board of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, and was State Director of District 7 from 1961 to 1963, and again in 1966. She was also very active in the Wright County Democratic Party and was Committee Chairperson for two terms. Zelma accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mountain Grove, Missouri. She loved children and loved teaching in Sunday School and Bible School. She also enjoyed music and playing the piano.
She is survived by her loving husband and partner: Eugene Young; one son and daughter-in-Law: Edward and Linda Young of Mountain Grove; one grandson: Kristopher Young and his wife, Letitia, of Springfield; four great granddaughters and two great-great grandsons; other relatives and many friends, along with her faithful caregiver of 4 ½ years, Donna Mitchell.

Friday, December 7, 2007 2:00 PM in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel.
Visitation:
Thursday, December 6, 2007 6:00 - 7:30 PM in the chapel.
Burial:
Hillcrest Cemetery
