Wilma D. Duey

Wilma Dean Duey, daughter of the late Archie and Mable (Hutsell) Spurgeon, was born on April 21, 1927 in Wright County, Missouri, and passed away peacefully on November 10, 2016 At Autumn Oaks Caring Center in Mountain Grove, Missouri, at 89 years of age.

Wilma was introduced to George C. Duey, Jr. by her good friend, Lois Jullian, while attending a public sale. Wilma and Junior were married on July 28, 1945. Junior still had nine months of military service left, so Wilma lived with her family until he returned home, then they began their life together on a farm near Green Mountain. In February of 1949, they moved to a farm near Dawson, Missouri, where they spent most of their lives together.

Junior and Wilma were surprised by the birth of twin girls on October 11, 1947: Donna Kaye and Vonna Faye. Junior had to go to town to find another bassinet but was unable to locate one, so he brought home an apple basket.

Wilma spent her entire life attending Friendship Baptist Church. She was saved as a young girl, raised her family there, and spent several years serving as church clerk, as well as serving in many other capacities.

Wilma was a wonderful seamstress. Her two girls were rarely clothed in anything that wasnt fashioned by their mother. Wilma also enjoyed crocheting and supplied her children and grandchildren with afghans. She and Junior always grew a big garden. She was also a wonderful cook. Many bountiful feasts were spread out across her kitchen and shared with friends and family. Wilma greatly enjoyed having her family come for Sunday dinner and visiting. Her grandchildren dearly loved coming to their farm to swing on the tire swing, run through the fields, play in the creek, and eat the best mashed potatoes and desserts. Her granddaughters especially loved playing dress-up with Grandmas things.

Later in life, Wilma and Junior enjoyed taking trips with their life-long friends, Bert and Ruth Rippee.

Besides her parents, Wilma was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Bill Douglass, her sister and brother-in-law, Charlene and Tip Forrest, her brother and sister-in-law, Willard and Connie Spurgeon, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Eldon and Lena Bell Duey, and her brother-in-law, Morris Duey.

She is survived by her loving husband of their home, Junior Duey, her two daughters, Donna Hazlett (Kirk) of Mountain Grove, Missouri, and Vonna Hilt (Jerald) of Norwood, Missouri, one brother, Sonny Spurgeon of Sparta, Missouri, two sisters, Jean Larmer (Bob) of Springfield, Missouri, and WIlda Todd (Tom) of Mountain Grove, Missouri, two brothers-in-law, Bill Duey (Gerri) of Kansas City, Missouri, and Don Duey of the state of Arizona, one sister-in-law, Wilma Duey of Rogersville, Missouri, seven grandchildren, Steve Douglass (Denise), Rhonda Hurtt (Ben), Lynda Quinn (Karl), Larry Baney (Amy), Leslie Cornelison (Mike), Leasa Hodges (Johnny), and Robyn Slain (Steve), fifteen great-grandchildren, Christian and Seth Douglass, Zach, Elynn, and Luke Hurtt, Elizabeth and Winston Quinn, Corey (Caitlin) and Alycia Baney, Taylor and Chase Cornelison, John and Rachel Hodges, and Ty and Lexie Slain, many nieces and nephews, and other relatives, friends, and church family who will dearly miss her.


Visitation: Monday, November 14, 2016 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home.

Funeral Service: Monday, November 14, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home.

Burial: Hillcrest Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions: Three Rivers Hospice in care of the funeral home.
