Walter Max Lyons

Known as the man that made a new friend every place he went, Walter Max Lyons departed this life December 25, 2022, and now rests in the hands of the Lord. He brought kindness everywhere he visited, even in the many places he’s lived. From birth in New Mexico on January 6, 1944, to his childhood home in Mansfield, Missouri, his lifelong love of adventure and travels eventually led him to join the U.S. Navy at the age of seventeen. As a Naval Gunners Mate, his many journeys across the seas brought great honor and patriotism to himself, his family, and his country. He honorably served until retirement, whereas he achieved the outstanding rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. He has always jokingly reminded us that in his youthful thought he chose to join the U.S. Navy solely relying on the fact that it was the only branch of service that didn’t require him to wear a tie. However, once he achieved the senior ranks, he was issued a military tie to wear regularly. Life always seemed to come back full circle to him and in his amazing ability to take the strides of life with casual humor, he made everything a little lighter and a little more fun with everyone he knew. Walter’s retirement brought him back to Mansfield, where he enjoyed a career working with Emerson Motors, and then went on to complete a second retirement with the Missouri Department of Corrections.

His love and passion for his family and friendships drove his life’s motivation. He went where a hat could be hung and a chair could be pulled up, always willing to share a story, give someone a reason to laugh, and to simply be present with those he cared about most. His heart was always full, and he left yours full when you spent even a moment with him. His love of tinkering with older trucks and cars, or speeding away on motorcycles gave him great purpose, especially when he rode on behalf of the honorable Patriot Guard. A guardian of others, a friend to all, an angel among those in heaven. Walter, Dad, Brother, Son, Friend – you will always be to us a source of kindness and love. Most of all, you will forever be missed and truly loved. Rest easy now. You have been a valued servant and friend.

Walter was preceded in death by his father and mother, Walter and Rose Lyons, his daughter, Rose “Cookie” Lyons, his sister, Norma Branstetter, his first wife, Carol Lyons (Hoerth), and his second wife, Shirley Lyons (Messer).

He is survived by his son, Spangle The Clown, his daughter, Vianna Lynn Lyons, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
