Wallace Clyde Akers

November 24, 1927 — February 20, 2008

Wallace Clyde Akers, 80 of Mtn. Grove, Missouri passed away on February 20, 2008 in the St. John’s Regional Health Center in Springfield, Missouri, following a long and difficult illness. He was born on November 24, 1927 at the home of his parents, Virgil Granville and Ethel Ruth (Mulkey) Akers in rural Norwood, Missouri in Douglas County. He was the 2nd oldest of eight boys and one girl. He lived most of his life in the Mtn. Grove area.
In 1946, Wallace served his country in the United States Army at the end of World War II, spending the majority of time in Seoul, Korea and was honorably discharged on March 14, 1947. After being honorably discharged he traveled to Idaho, Washington, and Oregon working in the fruit harvest. After a year he returned home and began working with his father as a mason, building various brick and block structures, until he started working on his own.
On June 7, 1955 he was united in marriage to Clara Irene Curtis in Hernando, Mississippi. Two sons were born to this union.
Wallace was a hard worker and a master brick/stone mason. He took great pride in his work, building many business buildings, dairy barns and laying brick on business buildings, schools, churches, and residences in Mtn. Grove and the surrounding communities. He loved to fish, especially during white bass season. He also enjoyed making a garden each year until his health started failing. When he was able to get out, he enjoyed his many coffee shop buddies. The joy of his life was his children and grandchildren. Wallace was a very loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor who will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Ralph, Morris, Granville “Bud”, John, and Kenneth; and by a niece: Debbie Akers.
He is survived by his loving wife and partner of almost fifty-three years: Irene Akers of their home; his sons: Stephen Wallace Akers and his companion, Shawn (Smith) MacDonald and Kelly Joe Akers and his wife, Leslie, all of Mtn. Grove; two brothers: Russell Akers and his wife, Kay, of Boise, Idaho, and Leon Akers and his wife, Gloria, of Cabool, Missouri; one sister: Carol Freeman of Belton, Missouri; four grandchildren: Stephen and Stephanie Akers of Lynden, Washington and Erin and Seth Akers of Mtn.
