July 25, 1923 — March 19, 2009

Violet “Lois” Susie Newberry, daughter of the late Robert and Loutisha Elizabeth (Smith) Hicks, was born on July 25, 1923 in Douglas County, Missouri and departed this life on March 19, 2009 in the Autumn Oaks Caring Center in Mtn. Grove, Missouri following a long illness. She was 85 years of age.
Lois was lovingly nicknamed “Cricket” by her father as a young child because she was small and was always jumping and hopping. She grew up and attended school in Douglas County. She was united in marriage to Henry Newberry on February 23, 1940 in Wright County, Missouri. Nine children were born to this union. Mr. Newberry passed away in October of 1976.
Lois was a true homemaker who loved taking care of her family. She enjoyed quilting, collecting porcelain dolls and salt and pepper shakers. She also enjoyed being outdoors tending to her flower and vegetable gardens.
At the time her passing and while living with her daughter near Springfield, Missouri, she was attending the Fruitland Road Church.
Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers: Thelmer Hicks, Leonard Hicks, Otis Hicks and Delmar Hicks; three sisters: Opal Brauley, Bell Boykin, and Lorine Reser; and by two grandchildren: Kyle Tooley and Angie Mallow.
She is survived by her five sons and their wives: Don and Joann Newberry of Vanzant, Missouri, Bob and Sherri Newberry, Ray and Carolyn Newberry, all of Mtn. Grove, Jesse and Linda Newberry of Lebanon, Missouri, and Wayne and Traci Newberry of Stover, Missouri; four daughters and their husbands: Kate and Pete Proctor of Mtn. Grove, Diana and Mike Creiger of Springfield, Missouri, Connie and Bill Klund of Jefferson City, Missouri and Dana Robertson of Louisburg, Missouri and Lanny Robertson of St. Charles, Missouri; one sister: Eva Jean Barlett of Colona, Illinois; eighteen grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren and another on the way; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her very much.
