Toney Elroy Johnston, son of the late Logan and Ethel Mae (Sanders) Johnston, was born on October 6, 1924 in Gentryville, Missouri, and passed away on January 1, 2007 in the Webco Manor Nursing Home in Marshfield, Missouri at 82 years of age.
Toney grew up in Douglas County and attended the Hickory Flat School. He was united in marriage to Lorene Brixey on December 1, 1952 in Mtn. Home, Arkansas. One son was born to this union.
Toney worked for several years at Swift Packing Company. In 1958 he purchased a dairy farm near Gentryville and farmed there until 1996. He sold the farm and he and Lorene moved to Marshfield, Missouri to be near their son and his family.
Toney enjoyed being outdoors, especially when tending to his farm, and collecting rock and arrowheads on his property.
Toney and Lorene attended the Little Zion Church in Denlow, Missouri for many years. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister: Helen McQuery.
He is survived by his wife, Lorene Johnston of Marshfield, Missouri; his son and daughter-in-law: Richard and Linda Kaye Johnston of Marshfield, Missouri; two granddaughters: Phoebe Ward and her husband Josh and Elizabeth Johnston; one great-granddaughter: Madelynn Ward, all of Marshfield, Missouri; five brothers: E. Paul Johnston of San Francisco, California, Geofrey Johnston and his wife, Reah if S. St. Paul, Minnesota, Sam Johnston and his wife, Mary of Gentryville, Missouri, Lee V. Johnston and his wife, Ursula of Henryville, Indiana, and Jack Johnston and his wife, Dorothy of Forsyth, Missouri; one sister, Ann M. Campbell and her husband, F.E. of Ozark, Missouri; nieces; nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him very much.
Funeral services for Toney Johnston were held Thursday, January 4, 10:00 AM in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel with Rev. Rex Smith officiating. Lonnie Krider, Vivian Floyd, Donald Powell and Harley Krider sang “What A Day That Will Be,” “Precious Memories,” and “Beyond The Sunset.” Pallbearers were James Brixey, Josh Ward, Wayne Wiseman, Eddie Williams, Robert Upshaw, and Lonnie Curtis. Ernie Williams served as honorary pallbearer. Burial was in the Denlow Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove, MO.
