Sylvia Richards, daughter of the late Joshua and Sarah (Whittington) Dean, was born on February 13, 1914 in Rayborn, Missouri and departed this life on Thursday, April 1, 2010 in the Autumn Oaks Caring Center in Mtn. Grove, Missouri following a long illness. She was 96 years, 1 month and 16 days of age.
Sylvia grew up in Texas County and was saved at an early age and enjoyed attending church throughout her life. She was united in marriage to Walter Butts in 1934. They made their home on a farm near Mtn. Grove and she was employed at the Brown Shoe Company for many years. They later moved to California where they were employed by a shoe manufacturing company. Walter passed away in April of 1962.
Following the death of her husband, Sylvia moved to Springfield, Missouri and worked at Calvert Garment Factory. She married Hugh Richards in 1967. They lived north of Springfield where she enjoyed being outdoors, tending to her flower and vegetable gardens each year. They attended the Lynn Street Baptist Church in Springfield. Mr. Richards passed away on April 3, 1992.
Following his death, Sylvia moved back to her hometown of Mtn. Grove and attended the Southside Baptist Church.
Besides her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter: Darlene Butts; two brothers: James and Elisha Dean; three sisters: Mamie Kendall, Frances Dean, and Goldia Landreth; three nephews: Ralph Dean, Bobbie Dean and Alvin Dean; and by two nieces: Essie Rice and Melinda Pokorny.
She is survived by four nephews: Russell of Springfield, Missouri, Ronald of Kansas City, Missouri, Marshall of Mtn. Grove, and David of California, Missouri; three nieces: Marilyn and Parthenia of the State of Kansas, and Judy of California, Missouri; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends who will sadly miss her.

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 2:00 PM in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Mountain Grove.
Visitation:
Monday, April 5, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel.
