Sylvia Alberta Sutherland

Sylvia Alberta (Gilley) Sutherland, daughter of the late Emmit and Tanna (Woody) Gilley, was born on July 4, 1919 south of Mountain Grove, Missouri in Douglas County, and departed this life on December 18, 2014 at Country Living Assisted Living in Mountain Grove, Missouri. She was 95 years, 5 months, and 14 days of age.
Sylvia was raised in a family of eight children, four boys and four girls. Sylvia was the oldest girl. On September 28, 1940, Sylvia was united in marriage to Cecil Holt. They moved to a farm and she helped Cecil milk a large herd of cows by hand before they got a milking machine. They also ran a milk route and raised hogs.
Sylvia was an excellent cook and was well known for her pies and cakes. Anytime there was a birthday, she would always say, Ill make the cake. She loved to sew and made many of her own clothes. She never had any children but was dearly loved and a favorite aunt to all nieces and nephews. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church and a 53 year member of Rebekah Lodge.
Cecil passed away on April 16, 1969. Sylvia then moved into town. She was married to Joe Sutherland on January 18, 1992. They had three wonderful years together before he passed away on March 12, 1995. Sylvia was also preceded in death by her four brothers: Afton, Charley, Melvin, and Arnold; two brothers-in-law: Alvin Wyscaver and Doil Clark; and one niece: Donna.
Sylvia is survived by three step-sons: Donald Sutherland and wife, Pam, of Springfield, Missouri, Ronald Sutherland and wife, Sue, of Republic, Missouri, and Bill Sutherland of Austin, Texas; one step-daughter: E.J. Coleman and husband, Tom, of California; three sisters: Ruby Wyscaver of Mountain Grove, Missouri, Wanda Gentry and her husband, Jay, of Mountain Grove, Missouri, and Doris Clark of Mountain Grove, Missouri; one sister-in-law: Reda Gilley; and one brother-in-law: Calvin Sutherland; six step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; nine nephews: Harvey Gilley, Jackie Gilley and wife, Patsy, Danny Gilley and wife, Debbie, Lawrence Gilley and wife, Hilda, Norman Gilley and wife, Coleen, Delbert Gilley and wife, Donna, Dennis Welch, Gary Curtis and wife, Teresa, and Larry Curtis and wife Debbie; and ten nieces: Jeannie Bradshaw and husband, Jack, Sharlene Reed, Geraldine Wilson, Ruby Tompkins, Virginia Strunk, Brenda Koontz and husband, Kenneth, Sharon Emery and husband, Ronnie, Debbie Reed and husband, Mark, Linda Driver and husband, Kenny, and Shirley Fletcher and husband, Rick.


Visitation: Sunday, December 21, 2014 from 2:00-3:30 PM in the Chapel.

Funeral Service: Monday, December 22, 2014 at 10:00 AM in the Chapel.

Burial: Lone Star Cemetery
