Shirley Hollis (Hoover) Dennis

September 2, 1908 — July 4, 2011

Shirley Hollis (Hoover) Dennis, daughter of the late Roy J. and Henry Etta (Burton) Hoover, was born on September 2, 1908 in Wauneta, Nebraska, and departed this life on July 4, 2011 in Overland Park, Kansas. She was in her 103rd year.
Shirley lived in Bartley, Nebraska before moving with her family to Mountain Grove in the sixth grade. (On her first day of school in Mountain Grove, Shirley sat next to Van Dennis, who would one day become her husband.) Shirley graduated from Mountain Grove High School in 1927. She married Van Stanfield Dennis on September 8, 1931. Three sons, Joe Duane Dennis, John Burke “Dick” Dennis, and Jerry Van Dennis, were born to this union.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, by all three of her sons, and by two grandsons: Richard Burton Dennis and Jeffrey Bryan Dennis; and by one great-grandson: Zachary Gilbert Odle.
Shirley lived, for a time, in Washington, Missouri, where her husband served as city engineer. Following the death of her husband, Shirley lived for more than thirty years in Westwood, Kansas, a small suburb of Kansas City. For the last several years of her life, Shirley was a beloved and cherished resident of Overland Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Overland Park, Kansas.
She was of the Protestant faith and loved her Lord, her family, and her friends in her quiet and gentle way.
Shirley is survived by ten grandchildren: JoVan Dennis Freeland, John Hoover Dennis, Christopher Dennis, Kim Dennis Pardon, Laurie Dennis Whisler, Michael “Nick” Dennis, Nan Dennis Lacy, and Erin Dennis Flint, all of the greater Kansas City area; Stephen Dennis of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Patrick Dennis of Cape Coral, Florida; eighteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several cousins; nieces; nephews; as well as many friends.
Everyone she knew will treasure the memories of Shirley, who all her family members lovingly called “Granny.” They will remember her wonderful smile, her sense of humor, her prodigious memory, her artistic touch and her sweet and wonderful disposition – all of which God allowed her to retain right up to her last few hours on this earth.
