Samuel B. “Sam” Coomer, son of the late James Andrew and Laura Belle (Loving)Coomer, was born on November 10, 1915 in Kentucky and passed away on March 22, 2007 in the Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston, Missouri following a long illness. He was 91 years, 4 months, and 12 days of age.
Sam grew up and attended school in Kentucky. He moved with his family to Missouri where he met and married Helen Mae (Brott) on March 10, 1934 at the Fairview Community Church near Mtn. Grove, Missouri. Two children were born to this union: Sam and Barbara Sue.
They moved to California in 1942 where Sam worked as a carpenter. They rededicated their lives to the Lord in 1970 and returned to their roots in the Ozarks in 1974 where they made their home in the Mtn. Grove Community.
They were members of the Calvary Temple Church near Mtn. Grove and faithfully attended as long as their health permitted. Helen passed away on November 11, 1996. Sam enjoyed being a carpenter over the years and volunteered his time and talent to help numerous churches while living in both California and Missouri.
He was a resident of the Kabul Nursing Home in Cabool, Missouri for a short time. His good friends, Paul and Karen Grover, attended his needs and business and helped him with various tasks for several years.
Besides his parents and his wife; he was preceded in death by a daughter: Barbara Sue Kruse; ten brothers and sisters: Rev. Archie Coomer, Willie “Bill” Coomer, Stella Coomer, Surber Coomer, James Stacey Coomer, George Clyde Coomer, Roxie Coomer Henderson, and Alpha Eugene Coomer and two who died in childhood.
He is survived by his son: Sam D. Coomer and his wife, Arlene of Pearce, Arizona; his son-in-law: Tony Kruse of Lake Hills, Texas; four grandchildren, Keith Kruse, Kirk Kruse, Kris Kruse, and Daniel Coomer; several great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him very much.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 28, 10:00 AM in the Calvary Temple Church with Rev. Bill Morris officiating. Karen Glover, Kevin Dennis, and Jerry England will serve as singers and musicians. Song selections will be “Amazing Grace,” “What A Friend,” and “In The Garden.” Pallbearers will be Paul Grover, Don Stovall, Ron Hilt, Phillip Nava, George Anderson, and Jerry England. Jimmie Shepherd will serve as honorary pallbearer. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove, Missouri.
