Ruby Jane Cain, daughter of the late Joseph Franklin and Julie B. (Maxey) Hicks, was born on August 27, 1920 in Ada, Oklahoma, and departed this life on April 14, 2007 at her residence in Mtn. Grove, Missouri, following a long illness. She was 86 years, 7 months, and 18 days of age.
Ruby moved from Oklahoma with her family as toddler to the West Plains, Missouri area in Howell County, where she grew up and attended school. She was united in marriage to Raymond Cain in September of 1934 in Howell County, Missouri. One daughter, Verba, was born on May 11, 1935. They farmed in the Vanzant, Missouri area for many years and she and her husband later moved to Mtn. Grove. They continued to farm in Douglas County and enjoyed spending time there.
Ruby worked as a nurse for twenty-two years for the Mtn. Grove Nursing Home. She also cared for, and cleaned homes for several elderly Mtn. Grove residents.
She was a founding member of the Twin Knobs Church in Vanzant where she was the secretary/treasurer for many years until her health prevented her from attending.
Ruby’s family was her real joy in life. She was a very dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and great-great-great-grandmother. She would help her family and friends in any way she could. She was also known as a wonderful cook, and seamstress. She could make clothes look like they were store bought, she also made beautiful quilts.
Ruby and Verba were very close and spent a lot of time together over the years. They had a lot of fun being together and made special memories.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Raymond Cain in 1991; and by thirteen brothers and sisters: Clyde “Candy” Smallwood, Sydney Hicks, Gladys Collins, Oscar Hicks, Lloyd Hicks, Hubert Hicks, Lenzy Hicks, twins: Zora Maye and Ora Faye Hicks, Helen Hicks, Billy Hicks, Trilby Hicks, and an infant sibling.
She is survived by her loving daughter, who cared for her in her home: Verba Brown of Mtn. Grove; three grandsons: Alvin Tooley and his wife, Deloris of Vanzant, Missouri, Rickie Tooley and his wife, Marsha, of Vanzant, Missouri, and Danny Tooley of Mtn. Grove; two granddaughter: Lila Iott and her husband, Danny, of Mtn. Grove; and Valerie Sympson and her husband, Johnny, of Licking, Missouri; fourteen great-grandchildren; twenty-three great-great-grandchildren with another on the way; and one great-great-great-grandchild; many nieces; nephews; cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her very much.
Funeral services for Ruby Cain were held Friday, April 20, 10:00 AM in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel with Rev. Mildred Frost officiating. Carol Collins, accompanied by Beth Hicks sang “Beulah Land,” and “When It’s All Been Said And Done.” Alvin Tooley, Rick Tooley, Danny Tooley, Danny Iott, Johnny Sympson, Rob Tooley, and Jeff Iott. Honorary pallbearers were Chris Iott, Darren Tooley, and Richard Tooley. Burial was in the Vanzant Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove, Missouri.
