Orville Thurman Millard, son of the late Louie Luther and Alice (Broyles) Millard, was born on February 19, 1916 in Des Moines, Iowa and departed this life on August 12, 2007 in the Autumn Oaks Caring Center in Mtn. Grove, Missouri, following a long illness. He was 91 years, 5 months, and 22 days of age.
Orville grew up and attended school in Iowa and graduated from Adel High School. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Glenn on June 20, 1937 in Des Moines. Two daughters blessed this union. They lived many years in Iowa but for the past nineteen years they had made their home in the Mtn. Grove area.
Orville served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was a P.O.W. in Germany. He was honorably discharged on December 4, 1945 as a Corporal. During his time of service in Rhineland Central Europe he was awarded the Good Conduct Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with two Battle Stars, American Theatre Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart medal, Presidential Unit Emblem and the European Theater Medal.
Following his discharge he enjoyed doing carpentry work, police work, construction and maintenance work. He also liked all kinds of animals and flowers.
Orville was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him. Orville was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Mtn. Grove and enjoyed attending services as long as his health permitted.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Alvena Schmidt and Velma Schafer.
He is survived by his loving wife of seventy years: Dorothy Millard of their home; his daughters: Marilyn Sornson and her husband, Jon, and Shirley K. Netherda, all of Mtn. Grove; three brothers: Luther Millard of Phillipsburg, Missouri, Russell Millard of Oroville, Washington, and Dean Millard of Phillipsburg, Missouri; one sister: Louise Walker of Turlock, California; three grandchildren: Sherrie Smartt, Scott Sornson, and Matthew Nordloh; five great-grandchildren; a special and loyal friend during World War II and throughout his lifetime: Floyd Chatham of Lebanon, Missouri; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Orville Millard were held on Thursday, August 16, 10:00 AM in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel with Pastor John Knobloch officiating. The Mtn. Grove Seventh Day Adventist Church Quartet sang “”Nothing Between My Soul & My Savior,” and “When The Roll Is called Up Yonder.” Pallbearers were Al Foster, Bob Wynn, Lewis McLean, Steve Smartt, Ron Rogers, and Scott Sornson. Burial with full military honors provided by the American Legion Post 30 with Jared Moore serving as Bugler was in the Lone Star Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove, Missouri.
