Mary Verlee McCoy, daughter of the late Richard “Dick” & Alice (Robertson) Key, was born January 12, 1928, in Wright County, Missouri, and passed from this life September 19, 2012, surrounded by her children. She was 84 years of age.
Verlee grew up in Wright County and attended the Perkins School near Manes, Missouri. On January 12, 1945, her 17th Birthday, Verlee was united in marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Farrell Warren McCoy. Three children were born to this union.
Farrell and Verlee raised their family near Manes and later moved to Mtn. Grove. Verlee baby sat for many years. In fact, she helped raise three generations of her own family. She also worked as Office Manager for Empire Gas Company for 10 years before retiring.
Verlee was a kind and loving woman. She always had a hug and words of encouragement for her family and friends. She was a very good cook and was well known for her homemade chicken and noodles. Verlee enjoyed travelling and had been to almost every state in the U.S. She loved fishing and being outdoors enjoying God’s creation. She spent many hours reading her Bible and listening to Bluegrass/Gospel music. Verlee was also an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Her greatest enjoyment came from being with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a very proud grandmother who loved to talk with others about her family.
Besides her parents and husband, Verlee was preceded in death by a brother: J.B. Key; and three sisters: Pansie Stigall, Dorothy Bradshaw, and June Ogle.
She is survived by one son: Bill McCoy and wife, Leyetta, of Springfield, Missouri; two daughters: Glennis Lynn of Springfield, Missouri, and Glenda McCarty and husband, Ken, of Mtn. Grove, Missouri; one brother: Carl Key of Lynchburg, Missouri; seven grandchildren: Scott McCoy and wife, Lisa, Tammy Worthy and husband, Bob, Richard McCoy, Jerry Lynn and wife, Diana, Mike Lynn and wife, Christina, Chris Burkhart and wife, Sarah, and Jeff Burkhart and wife, Melody; fifteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces; nephews; a host of other relatives and many friends. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
