Marie Chapman, daughter of the late Ralph and Eva Zmuda, was born August 25, 1941, in Savannah, Georgia. She gained her heavenly wings at 12:15 PM on January 22, 2025, in Springfield, Missouri, with her family by her side.
After a short time in Georgia, Marie and her big brothers, Ralph and Myron “Mike,” moved to Minnesota to live with their grandparents. She enjoyed several years there with her grandparents before relocating to Washington State to live with her dad, Ralph, and his wife, Lois, and their six children. In all, Marie had three brothers and five sisters.
Marie married Robert Francis Hos and two children were born to this union: daughter, Teresa, and son, Kenny. On December 7, 1968, Marie married Dennis Chapman and they moved the family to California, where they began a new adventure as restaurant operators. Marie cooked and served as a waitress at the small family café for years until they decided to close and go on to other business ventures.
In 1980, the family decided it was time to leave the busy, chaotic life in California, so they moved to rural Ava, Missouri. Farm life began with a feeder pig operation and then included raising registered Collies and Poodles.
Following the loss of her husband, Dennis, Marie sold the farm and downsized a few times, ending at Ridgecrest Apartments in Mountain Grove, Missouri, where she lived for the past several years. Marie enjoyed playing Skip-Bo, putting jigsaw puzzles together, and hosting monthly dinners in the Community Room. When she wasn’t busy with those activities, you could find her visiting with neighbors, going to Country Mart for scratcher tickets, or talking on the phone to her kids and grandkids.
Marie was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; husband, Denny; and four siblings.
Marie is survived by her daughter, Teresa Stout and husband, Randy Joe, of Drury, Missouri; her son, Kenny Hos and wife, Barb, of West Plains, Missouri; six grandkids, Doni, Kristi, Kevin, Daniel, Sara, Rachel, Lizzie, and Ivey; several great-grandkids; two great-great-grandkids; two brothers; and two sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made to Evansdale Cemetery or American Cancer Society.
