Luel Edgar Long was born on September 26, 1919 in the Mtn. Valley Community, of Wright County, Missouri to Joel E. “Joe” and Eliza (Owens) Long. He was one of eight children. He departed this life for a better place on May 29, 2012 in the Autumn Oaks Caring Center in Mtn. Grove, Missouri, at 92 years of age.
Luel grew up in the Mtn. Valley area and attended the Mtn. Valley rural school. As a teenager, he worked in the CCC Camps in Utah and liked to tell stories of his experiences there.
His favorite story was his courtship of a pretty young lady, named Violet Mathis. He married his sweetheart on December 21, 1938 in Harrisonville, Missouri. They were blessed with three children, Vernon, Connie and Linda.
Luel worked in the Shipyards near Richmond, California, for a time. He returned to the Mtn. Grove area where he bought a farm. Luel worked hard, from sunrise to sundown and many times beyond. He had a milk route, dairy, poultry and egg business. His blue Chevy delivery truck was a familiar sight, delivering eggs to grocers and restaurants in the southern Missouri area. He taught his family the values of hard work and determination. He and Violet have been an inspiration to their children and grandchildren. He is remembered as a quiet man with deep faith in God.
Luel sold his dairy cows in 1991. He and Violet moved to a home just west of Mtn. Grove to enjoy their retirement. As long as his health permitted, Luel liked to work in his yard and garden. He and Violet enjoyed traveling, going to music get-togethers, family events, attending church, and just visiting with friends at McDonalds.
Luel was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Alva Long; four sisters: Eva Long, Iva Webb, Alma Middleton, and Marie Carter. His heart was broken in October of 2010 by the death of his youngest daughter: Linda Holland.
He is survived by his loving wife of seventy-three years: Violet Long, of Mtn. Grove; his son: Vernon Long and his wife, Virginia; his daughter: Connie Dake and her husband, Junior, all of Mtn. Grove; his son-in-law: Derek Holland of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; six grandchildren: Lynn Long and his wife, Sheila, of Mtn.
