Lonnie Gene Rogers

Lonnie Gene Rogers, the youngest son of Claude and Agnes (Baty) Rogers, was born at their home near Manes, Missouri on February 18, 1949. Lonnie died as the result of a skid steer loader accident on his farm near Manes on March 7, 2010 at the age of 61 years and 17 days.
Lonnie grew up and attended elementary school in the Manes area and later attended high school in Mtn. Grove. He was united in marriage to Bonnie Luckey in 1968. Three daughters were born to this union, Cindy, Tammy, and Tabatha. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1969, taking his basic and advanced training at Fort Leonard Wood, before deploying to the jungles of Vietnam, two weeks after the birth of his daughter, Cindy.
He was wounded while on Recon Patrol on March 18, 1970 and spent three weeks in the hospital. He was honorably discharged on March 21, 1971. While in the service, he received several medals and badges such as; Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge and a Purple Heart. Following his discharge, he returned home and began working in the logging industry. Lonnie worked most of his life as a carpenter, supervising job sites throughout Missouri, Florida, and Texas. During his life he was also a dairy and beef farmer and an over the road truck driver.
Not only was Lonnie an extremely hard worker, he was a talented individual. He taught himself to play the guitar and was teaching his grandsons to also play and sing. He enjoyed singing and playing music over the years with his sister, Juanita and his wife, Bonnie at area churches and get-togethers.
One of his greatest passions in life was his family whom he loved spending time with, especially his grandchildren. He always said “they were his reason for living.” He spent many hours teaching them to hunt, fish, and sing. He liked telling them his favorite jokes and stories.
Lonnie enjoyed life to the fullest; those around him knew he did just exactly what he wanted. He was an avid outdoorsman; hunting, fishing, woodworking, riding his motorcycle and tinkering around on his farm and machinery.
Lonnie was saved and baptized as a young adult. He attended various churches throughout his life and at the time of his passing, he was attending the Crossroads of Faith Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Joe Rogers and Ralph Rogers; and by two sisters: Barbara Baty and Juanita Willhite.
He is survived by his wife: Bonnie Rogers; three daughters: Cindy Porter, Tammy Kelly and her husband, Russell, and Tabatha Skaggs and her husband, Eric, all of Mtn. Grove; a step-daughter: Terena Luckey of Mtn. Grove; one brother: Donald Rogers of Mtn. Grove; seven grandchildren: Bailey and Jamie Towell, Savannah Porter, Colton and Luxie Kelly, Kody and Shelby Skaggs, Macey, Harrison, Dustin and Ty Skaggs, Katrina, Terrance, and Kelsey Parsons; and a host of other relatives and friends who will sadly miss him.

Lonnie will always be remembered as a big man with a big heart.
