Charles Leroy Spencer, son of the late Charley and Myra (Wade) Spencer, was born on December 22, 1935 in Manes, Missouri, and departed this life on Sunday, July 13, 2008 in the Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, Missouri, following a long illness. He was 72 years, 6 months, and 21 days of age.
Leroy grew up and attended school in Wright County. He was united in marriage to Deloris Lawler. Four children were born to this union. They raised their family in Wright County and were living in the Hartville area at the time of his passing.
Leroy enjoyed being outdoors, especially when hunting and fishing.
He believed in being a good employee in whatever job he held.He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He loved his family very much and enjoyed spending time with them, especially his grandchildren.
He will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him.He loved to visit with those around him and he never met a stranger.
Leroy was an avid St. Louis Cardinal’s fan and enjoyed listening to and watching the games whenever possible.
He loved Christian music and was a Sunday School Teacher and Sunday School Superintendent. He enjoyed attending church services and was a wonderful example of Christian love in action. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother: Paul Spencer of Wichita, Kansas.
He is survived by his loving wife: Deloris Spencer of their home; his children: Tammy Humphrey and her husband, Joe, of Nixa, Missouri, Sheila Hughes and her husband, Charley, of Pensacola, Florida, Wade Spencer and his friend, Melinda Coonts, of Bucyrus, Missouri, and Kristie Mize and her husband, Tim, of Grovespring, Missouri; ten grandchildren: Jeremy and Jennifer Fletcher, Misti, Adam, and Brooke Spencer, Traci, Heather, Kody, Kassidy, and Kayla Rose Payne; one great-grandson: Chase Matthews; one brother: Jack Spencer of Ocala, Florida; one sister: Betty Kelsay of Mtn. Grove; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Leroy Spencer were held Wednesday, July 16, 11:00 AM in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel with Dr. Joe Humphrey officiating. Tammy Humphrey served as musician. Song selections were “Go Rest High On That Mountain,” “Daddy Let Me Drive,” Small Town Southern Man,” and A medley of his favorite hymns. Pallbearers were his grandchildren: Jeremy Fletcher, Jennifer Fletcher, Misti Spencer, Adam Spencer, Brooke Spencer, Traci Payne, Kody Payne, Kassidy Payne, Heather Payne and Kayla Rose Payne. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove, Missouri.
