LeRoy Gerdom Jones, was the third child born to William Perry and Mary Kathryan (Gerdom) Jones, in Canon City, Colorado, on November 20, 1930. He left this earth to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, January 13, 2008.
After graduating from high school in Hardin, Montana in 1948, he attended Montana State University at Missoula, Montana. After two years, he joined the United States Navy where he served four years.
He met Joyce Wood and was married in Fresno, California in 1953. They recently celebrated 54 years together. To this union a son, Jeff was welcomed.
LeRoy graduated from Fresno State in Fresno, California in 1958 with a B.A. degree in Industrial Arts. After earning his teaching certificate, he taught in the Los Angeles School district for 17 years.
He and Joyce moved to their farm in Howell County, Missouri in 1978 to be near family and have space to operate his John Deere equipment and raise Angus cattle.
Well after normal retirement age, LeRoy enjoyed working as a carpenter right up until a few weeks before his terminal illness.
He leaves his wife: Joyce Jones of Cabool, Missouri; his son: Jeff Jones and his wife, Peggy, of St. Louis, Missouri; a sister: Maude Evelyn Rowland and her husband, Frank; a brother: William Jones Jr., all of Albuquerque, New Mexico; brothers-in-law: Johnny Wood and his wife, Helen, of Cabool, Missouri, and Russell Wood and his wife, Joanne, of Mtn. Grove; a sister-in-law: Janice Lowe of Cabool, Missouri; many nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends.
Funeral services for Leroy Jones were held Thursday, January 17, 2008 in the First United Methodist Church in Cabool, Missouri, with Pastor Art Ellsworth and Rev. David Carroll officiating. Melissa Aufner, Vicki Woods, Joy Lower, and Jimmy Deverell served as singers and musicians. Song selections were “amazing Grace,” “The Lord’s Prayer,” and “His Eye Is On The Sparrow.” Pallbearers were Travis Longwell, Mike Lunbeck, Mike Haff, Ronnie Shelley, Terry Campbell and Joe Bass. Full military honors were provided by the Lima Burial Detail with Jared Moore serving as bugler. Burial was in the Mount Ararat Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove, Missouri.
