Lee Winston Walters

Lee Winston Walters, son of the late Robert Wade Sr. and Ruth Lelah (Dent) Walters, was born on June 23, 1928, in Manhattan, Kansas, and departed this life on August 23, 2015, at Autumn Oaks Caring Center in Mountain Grove, Missouri. He was 87 years and 2 months of age.
Lee was united in marriage to Ruth Anne Halsel on July 13, 1968, in Lees Summit, Missouri. They shared 47 wonderful years together. Lee loved canoeing and camping on the river. Until he and Ruth had children, they would go every other weekend. Lee was not afraid to take challenges while canoeing. Lee always said he got his Bachelors on the North Fork, his Masters on the Buffalo, and his Doctorate on the Mulberry.
He enjoyed singing in a quartet as tenor in high school in Manhattan, Kansas. He also loved playing chess during study hall. Lee served in the Korean War. He was also stationed in Okinawa as a truck driver, delivering supplies and as a mail carrier. Lee had his Bachelors of Science in Education. He taught Industrial Arts/Agriculture for one year. Lee then worked at Western Electric in Lees Summit as a trouble shooter for 15 years.
In 1977, he and his family moved to the Norwood, Missouri area. There he built, owned, and operated his own saw mill. He built their home from the ground up with the help of friends from Lees Summit, a neighbors son, and his five year old twin sons, Brian and Doug.
Lee was an avid gardener and had a huge garden every year. His family remembers him canning approximately 300 quarts of green beans one year. He loved green beans every night at supper. One of his main hobbies was reloading rifle shells. He loved guns of all kinds and shooting and won trophies at shooting contests. He loved shooting his model cannon every year on the Fourth of July. He also enjoyed playing Rummy, chewing on toothpicks, and telling funny stories.
Lee was saved at an early age. He loved studying and reading the Bible. He was a member at Living Waters Worship Center in Mountain Grove. Lee will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Besides his parents, Lee was preceded in death by one son: Doug Walters; one brother: Robert W. Walters, Jr.; and by one sister: Jean Wenzel.
He is survived by his wife of their home: Ruth Walters; one son: Brian Walters and his wife, Amy, of Springfield, Missouri; one daughter: Rebecca Sue Walters of Mountain Grove, Missouri; one daughter-in-law: Laura Walters of Mountain Grove, Missouri; one step-son: Tony Clark and his wife, Cindy, of Shawnee, Kansas; eight grandchildren: Kristy Clark, Stacey Tipper, Sherri Vlastuin, Shaela Walters, Mariah Walters, Shane Walters, Brian Walters, Jr., and Aaron Walters; one great-grandchild: McKinley Tipper; and a host of other family and friends who will miss him dearly.


Visitation: Wednesday, August 26, 2015 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home.

Service: Thursday, August 27, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home.
