Landon Darrell Newton, beloved father to his children, Keely, Cheyenne, Jessi, and Rowdy, son of Darrell and Darlene Newton, and brother to Shannan Linder, departed this life with his daughter, Cheyenne, by his side on Thursday, December 9, 2021, at 5:00 a.m. He was 41 years and 5 months young.
The second of two children, Landon was born July 10, 1980, to Darrell Roy Newton and Darlene (Hampton) Newton in Springfield, Missouri, and was raised in Seymour.
Landon married Rebeckie Sue Cantrell on September 15, 2001, and to this union four children were born. Landon and Sue divorced in 2018 but remained friends.
At the age of 8, Landon received his first horse from Aunt Verna, who taught him to be an avid team roper. At the age of 15, he had a shoot-out spot with Lee Bettis at a USTRC roping. They placed third out of 200 teams, and Landon was on cloud nine. He credited all his roping and riding skills to his Aunt Verna.
Landon loved life and lived it to the fullest. At the age of 16 ½, he started riding bulls on several rodeo circuits. At 17 he was leading the pack, bull riding in three rodeo associations. All the endorsements, recognitions, and money never changed Landon. He was a hard worker on all his jobs and gave it his all. Landon had an uncle, Marvin Hampton, that was “the best timber cutter around” that he idolized. For the last 12 years of his life, Landon was a logger.
Landon adored his three girls and son. He would say they all have different agendas and personalities, but a lot of their dad was engrained in them. He knew them inside and out. Keely Shaye was his little spitfire and a mind of her own, Cheyenne Sierra was his little daredevil and blown out temper, Jessi Nichole was his little bookworm and sweet, and Rowdy Dale was his idolizer; he wants to be just like his dad. Landon taught his children respect, manners, and the love of family, along with chewing skoal, sneaking out, and doing things that their mother thought wasn’t appropriate for girls. I bet to this day, they haven’t told their mother everything. They made a pact with their dad that will last a lifetime.
The last year of Landon’s life he had life-threatening health issues. Even though he was partially paralyzed and had open heart surgery with valve replacement, it never got him down. He would say, “the wheelchair was only temporary.”
He was preceded in death by his dad, Darrell Roy Newton, grandparents, Arlin and Ercie Newton and Bud and Edith Hampton.
Landon leaves behind his dear mother, Darlene, of Seymour; sister, Shannan Newton Linder and husband, Craig, of Marshfield; beloved children, Keely Shaye Ireland and husband, Austin, of Seymour, Cheyenne Sierra, Jessi Nichole, and Rowdy Dale Newton, all of the home; three grandchildren, Bentley, Maddie, and Ivan Ireland; nephew, Cole Linder and wife, Morgan, of Flora, Illinois; great-nephew, Knox Linder; and many aunts, uncles, cousins. Family came first in Landon’s eyes. Most of all, Landon will be remembered for his wonderful personality and smile.
We take this time, on this day, to honor his life and accomplishments and the legacy he leaves behind. The memories and moments he created for his family will be forever cherished in their hearts.
