Jewell L. Turner

September 8, 1908 — February 8, 2007

Jewell Lois (Welch) Turner, daughter of the late Clayborn and Matilda (Allen) Welch, was born on September 8, 1908 in the Owens community north of Norwood, Missouri and passed away on February 8, 2007 at the Hartville Care Center in Hartville, Missouri. She was 98 years and 5 months of age.
As a young girl, Jewell attended Oak Grove Free Will Baptist Church where she gave her life to Christ. On December 13, 1925 she married Arch Gibson Turner. Seven sons were born to this union. Arch and Jewell raised their family in the Broyles community. Jewell helped on the farm and tended the home. Being a good mother, she was faithful in raising her children at Bethel Church. She prayed that God would call one of her sons to be a preacher. Not only did God answer her prayer, He tripled it. In later years, after Bethel Church closed, Arch and Jewell joined the Oak Grove Free Will Baptist Church. After moving to Mtn. Grove, they enjoyed riding the church bus with their friends.
Jewell set a good example to those around her by praying, singing the old hymns, and reading her Bible daily. She was also blessed with the gift of hospitality. Through the years, she always made sure the preacher had a place to go for lunch. She loved having family and friends in her home, making them her famous chicken and dumplings or fried chicken and all those pies.
The memory of Jewell will carry on thru those who mourn their loss but celebrate her victory.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Arch Turner; one brother: Jesse Welch; two sisters: Opal Hurtt and Elsie Dugger; a son, Darrell, and an infant son, Joseph; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She is survived by five sons: Carl Turner and his wife, Vivian, of Hartville, Missouri, Harold Turner and his wife, Mildred, of Dover, Arkansas, Ronald Turner and his wife, Wilma, of Mtn. Grove, Missouri, Shirley Turner and his wife, Delores, of Mtn. Grove, Missouri, and Herman Turner of Kennett, Missouri; 23 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren who will remember her for playing “Skip-Bo”; and 26 great-great-grandchildren who may not remember her, but will always cherish the quilts she made especially for them. Jewell also leaves behind many other treasured relatives and dear friends.
Funeral services for Jewell Turner were held Monday, February 12, 11:00 AM in the Oak Grove Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. R.E. Helsley officiating. The Moore Family sang “Amazing Grace,” “Sweet By And By,” and “I Want Us To Be Together In Heaven.” Pallbearers were Mike Turner, Bobby Turner, Larry Turner, Wallace Turner, David Turner, Jim Turner, Jerry Turner, and Rick Turner. Burial was in the Oak Grove Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove, MO.
