Janet (Young) Miranda

March 12, 1948 — May 1, 2016

Janet (Jan) Young Miranda, died unexpectedly at her home in Dallas, Texas, on Sunday, May 1, 2016. Jan was born on March 12, 1948 in Springfield, Missouri, to J.C. Young and Edna Young of Mountain Grove. She was the granddaughter of Francis and Beulah Mae Young, longtime residents of the community, as well as R.B. and Bessie Grisham of Elk Creek, Missouri.

Jan is survived by her husband, John Miranda of Dallas, her son, John Betten of Boone, Iowa, and her grandson, Jackson Betten of Frisco, Texas, along with her brothers, Richard Young of Vero Beach, Florida and Lee Young of Dallas, Texas. She was preceded only last year by her youngest son, Hans Betten of Dallas.

Jan was a graduate of Mountain Grove High School where she was deeply involved in the various activities of the Music Department as a member of the band, the choir, and as a vocal soloist. She later earned a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Missouri, where she was a Golden Girl (twirler) with the Marching Mizzou band. At MU she was a proud member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.

After marriage and a move to Iowa, in the early 1980s, Jan relocated with her two young sons to Dallas, where she continued her career in teaching. After completing a PhD at the University of North Texas, Jan became an academic counselor at Trinity Christian Academy in Addition, Texas. Eventually, Jan joined the faculty at Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano, Texas, serving the families of PCA until her death. Happy and respected in her chosen field, Jan received wide acclaim, including being named the High School Counselor of the Year for the entire United States. She received great joy and satisfaction from being able to assist her students in planning and securing their respective acceptance at major colleges and universities throughout the U.S.

Jan will be sorely missed by her many friends and family.
