James Elmer Higby

October 8, 1939 — July 26, 2011

James E. Higby, 71, of Las Cruces was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, July 26, 2011. Jim, as he was fondly known was born Oct. 8, 1939 in Rayborn, MO, to George and Opal Higby. Jim combined his passions of auto racing and ministry by serving as the chaplain for the Southern New Mexico Speedway. He also was a volunteer chaplain for Memorial Medical Center, and continuously shared the love of Jesus Christ to all he came in contact with. Jim had a long and fulfilling career of 35 years as a civil servant for the US Army. He worked to meet the educational needs of soldiers and was proud to finish out his career by setting up an education center in Afghanistan. In all his accomplishments he made sure that God was praised above all. Jim also enjoyed the lighter side of life which included softball, card games, gospel music, painting, and mostly spending time with his granddaughters. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Jim is survived by his son Matthew Higby and wife Trilby, daughters Meribeth Higby-Turner, Charity Harvey and husband Phil III of Las Cruces, and Georgina Tilley and husband Paul of Missouri; sisters Georgia of Indiana, Kay and husband Allen, Peggy, Janice and husband Chuck, Pammy, and one brother, Edd and his wife Chris of Missouri; grandchildren Jae Lena, Charlotte, Amber, Molly, Cheyenne, and Kylie and by his great-granddaughter Mattilynn.
