Fern Belle Fitzhugh

Fern Belle Fitzhugh, age 99, passed away July 13, 2023, in Sonshine Manor in Republic, Missouri. She was born Fern Belle Ragsdale on July 26, 1923, in the hills of the Ozarks to Minnie and Dick Ragsdale. She had two brothers and eight sisters.

Fern married Garland Fitzhugh Sr. whom she met in Kansas City, Missouri.

Fern graduated from Cabool High School in 1942. Shortly after graduation, she moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where she attended business school and then went to work for a bank. When she was needed in WW 2 to make planes, she went to work for Pratt Whitney.

Fern, also known as Mighty Fern, was a remarkable woman with a zest for life. She had a spirited personality and a heart of gold. Fern was known for her tiny frame, bow-legged walk, and her unwavering commitment to maintaining a clean and tidy home. She was a nurturing soul who took great pleasure in teaching, baking, gardening, and being a devoted homemaker.

Fern's love for teaching extended beyond the home. She was always eager to share her knowledge and wisdom with others. Whether it was imparting her baking secrets or offering gardening tips, Fern was always ready to lend a helping hand.

In her free time, Fern enjoyed being a "wheel watcher." She found great joy in solving puzzles and keeping up with the latest game shows. It was a source of entertainment that brought her much delight.

She is survived by two sisters, Dixie Baty of Mount Vernon, Missouri, and Maxine Baty of Tempe, Arizona, one son, Garland Fitzhugh Jr. and his wife, Judy Fitzhugh, one daughter, Karen Sue Motley "Susie", four grandchildren, Garland Fitzhugh III, Libbessa Maxwell, Siscillea Motley, and Danielle Payne and her husband, Jamie, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Fern Fitzhugh will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her warm heart, kind spirit, and infectious laughter will forever be cherished in our memories. She’s gone to be with her heavenly father. ‘Till we meet again, we love you.
