Emerson E. Atchison

Emerson Edmond Atchison, son of the late Ira Boone and Charity Margaret (Stark) Atchison was born on July 7, 1922 in Douglas County, Missouri and departed this life on July 25, 2007 at the Autumn Oaks Caring Center in Mtn. Grove, Missouri, following a long illness. He was 85 years, and 18 days of age.
Emerson grew up and attended school in Douglas County and served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was present during the Pearl Harbor Bombing. He was honorably discharged on January 27, 1946 as a Private First Class.
He was united in marriage to Bertha Shores on May 13, 1946 in Douglas County, Missouri. Three sons were born to this union. They made their home in the Norwood, Missouri area for over forty years. He was employed by Tobin-Hamilton Shoe Company for fifteen years and by Mansfield Steel for ten years.
Emerson greatly enjoyed the outdoors especially when gardening, coon hunting, and pitching horse shoes with his family and friends.
He was a kind husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Emerson had been a member of the Assembly of God Church in Norwood since 1981. He enjoyed attending services as long as his health permitted.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Bertha Atchison on December 27, 2006; three brothers: Earl, Neal, and Homer Atchison; and by one sister: Pauline Vaughan.
He is survived by his three sons: Eddie Atchison of Mtn. Grove, Missouri, Johnny Atchison and his wife, Karolyn of Omaha, Arkansas, and Ronnie Atchison and his wife, Janet of Norwood, Missouri; ten grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; brother and sisters-in-law: Nola Atchison, Stella and Bill Blanton, John and Shirley Shores, and Grace and Darrell Nicholson; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Emerson Atchison were held Friday, July 27, 2007, 2:00 PM in the Assembly of God Church, Norwood, with Rev. Tom Fortner officiating. Donna Bruffett, Dana Gaskins, Darrell Mead, Donna Bennett, and Paula Fortner served as singers and musicians. Song selections were “Precious Memories,” “Sweet Beulah Land, and congregational song “Victory In Jesus.” Pallbearers were Toby Alcorn, Cody Atchison, Nathan Atchison, Justin Atchison, Duane Atchison, Roman Atchison, Darin McGowan, Chris Decker, Stacy Rogers, and Tim Green. Burial with full military honors provided by the American Legion Post 30 with Jared Moore serving as bugler was in the Oak Forest Cemetery, south of Norwood, under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn.
