Edgar L. “Ed” Campbell, son of the late Spencer Raymond and Vishie (Moore) Campbell, was born on November 22, 1935 in Center, Missouri, in Rolls County, and passed away suddenly on November 10, 2011 in the Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston, Missouri, at 75 years of age.
Ed, a country boy, grew up along the banks of Lick Creek near Perry, Missouri. He loved to fish, hunt, and play baseball. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Schutte, on November 12, 1955. Two children were born to this union.
They made their home and raised their family in the Perry, Missouri area. Ed worked as a farmhand and later took a job at International harvester before beginning his career with the telephone company as a lineman and working his way up to an area manager. Throughout the thirty years with the telephone company, he was transferred to a number of towns in Missouri. He always loved meeting and making new friends and working on civic projects within each community. He enjoyed doing volunteer work whenever he could. He was a Volunteer Fireman at Perry, Missouri, involved with the Jaycees Organization, served as a City Alderman, a Police Commissioner, and a President of Washington County Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club, both in Mtn. Grove. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rites, and the Elks.
In 1987, he was awarded from Contel the Central Region Citizenship Award and also the South Central Division award for his outstanding contributions to his community. He also helped organize the development of the Forshe Valley Golf Course at Potosi, Missouri while living there.
He and Barbara moved to Mtn. Grove, Missouri in 1988 where he was the area manager for the Contel Telephone Company. He retired at the end of 1990. He later worked as an engineer for the Sullivan Telephone Company, for AT & T Telephone Office in Branson, Missouri, and for GTE in Northeast Missouri. He was also involved with the Texas and Wright Counties 911 system.
Edgar was the economic Development Director for Washington County. He received an award for Best Beautification Project in the State of Missouri with the Jaycees at Perry, Missouri, which was given by Governor Warren Hearns. He was a manager and also in charge of the new safety department at Contel Telephone Company and was the head of Contel’s first safety inspection tour of the southeastern states in 1985.
Ed loved to play golf. He was a member of the Wedgewood and the Randall Golf Courses in Mtn. Grove. This past August, at the age of seventy-four, he reached his golfing goal and his first 70.
Ed also enjoyed being an early riser. he liked to garden and enjoyed just being outdoors in general whenever possible.
Ed was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He truly loved his family very much and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
At the time of his passing, Ed attended the First Baptist Church in Mtn. Grove where he loved the people and made great friendships with his church family.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Lester Bright, Norman Bright, and Don Campbell; and by one sister: Louise Sagert.
He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-six years: Barbara Campbell of their home in Mtn. Grove; his son and daughter-in-law: Kevin and Jackie Campbell of Buffalo, Missouri; his daughter and son-in-law: Retha Carol and Eric Rublein; two brothers: J.R. Campbell and his wife, Grace, of Tucson, Arizona, and Joe Campbell and his wife, Frances, of Highland, Illinois; four sisters: Jean Clay of Niles, Ohio, Betty Baker of Columbia, Missouri, Sue Boots of La Grange, Missouri and Helen Ruth Dugan and her husband, Bill, of Mexico, Missouri; seven grandchildren: Heather Daniel, Kristi Mott, Lauren Van Winkle, Jami Lee, Lucinda Park, Leslie Ballew, Alexandra Rublein and their families; fourteen great-grandchildren: numerous nieces; nephews; great-nieces, great-nephews; and a host of other relatives, church family, neighbors, and friends.
