Dorothy Gertrude (Price) Stillwell was born March 29, 1917 in Thayer, Missouri, the fifth child of Charles Homer Price and Gertrude Irene (Green) Price. She departed this life April 1, 2013, three days after her 96th birthday at her home in Deepwater, Missouri.
After her early years in Thayer, she moved with her brother, Albert, to Mountain Grove, Missouri, where she met her future husband, Afton Stillwell. They were married in Douglas County on Feb. 1, 1934 shortly before her seventeenth birthday. It was in Mountain Grove that she adopted the name Jeanne, by which she was usually known.
She lived sixty years in Mountain Grove and was well known by many people. She was baptized at an early age and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Mountain Grove. She completed her high school education by correspondence school in the 1960‘s and then obtained 2 years of college credit by taking various classes in the area that were offered by Drury, SMS, and the University of Missouri.
At the start of World War II, she worked at Ben Franklin Dime Store and helped pull all items made in Japan off the shelves in December, 1941. She worked there until her son was born in 1943, but resumed work there in the 1950’s. She also worked at Cloud Manufacturing, Stella’s, Tobin-Hamilton Shoe Factory in Mansfield, Uncle Dudley’s, Railway Express, Head Start, and retired while in her 70’s from the Missouri Division of Family Services.
She was preceded in death by her parents; all five siblings; and her husband: Afton, who passed away in their fiftieth year of marriage.
Survivors are her son: James Thomas Stillwell of Deepwater, Missouri; two grandsons and two great-grandsons: Ryan Price Stillwell and Cayden James Stillwell of Springfield, MO and Michael Afton Stillwell and Cooper James Stillwell of Clinton, MO.
