Dorothy Edna Ballard

September 14, 1913 — March 20, 2007

Dorothy Edna Ballard, daughter of the late George R. and Nancy Ellen (Jackson) Hoke, was born on September 14, 1913 in Turley, Missouri, and departed this life on March 20, 2007 at her residence in Mtn. Grove, Missouri, following a long illness. She was 93 years, 6 months, and 6 days of age.
Dorothy grew up in the Turley Community and was united in marriage to Lawrence Gaylord Ballard. One son was born to this union. They lived on a farm for many years and following the death of Mr. Ballard on November 12, 1976, Dorothy tended to the farm by herself for twelve years. She later moved to Mtn. Grove where she was living at the time of her passing.
She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed attending numerous quilting clubs. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, and doing ceramics. She had an outgoing personality and made many friends over the years.
Dorothy was a longtime member of the Southside Baptist Church and enjoyed attending as long as her health permitted.
Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Ray Hoke.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Leonard and Fern Ballard of Las Vegas, Nevada; one sister: Stella Crabtree of Houston, Missouri; three grandchildren: Phillip Ballard, Linda Clark, and Diane McVeda; seven great-grandchildren: Michelle, Beau, Joseph, Amy and Richard Clark, and Tiffany and Whitney McVeda; three great-great-grandchildren: Taylor, Shelby, and Colton Skinner; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her very much.
Funeral services for Dorothy Ballard were Thursday, March 22, 2:00 PM in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel with Rev. Roger Flint officiating. Iby and Ruth Edwards and John and Shirley Shores sang “Amazing Grace,” and “When The Saints Go Marching In.” Pallbearers were Gene Hastings, Ted Martin, John Shores, Rob Holbrook, Iby Edwards and Mearl Clark. Burial was in the Number One Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove, Missouri.
