Doris Louise Moore

Doris Louise Moore, daughter of the late Ralph and Flossie (Barnett) Thompson, was born in Norwood, Missouri, on October 4, 1927. She was raised in a family including one brother, Bob. She departed this life on August, 11, 2020 at the age of ninety-two years, 10 months, and 7 days.

When Doris was in the first grade, she moved with her family to Tulare, California, where her father worked on a dairy. Some of her best stories and fondest childhood memories were of her friends at Cherry Avenue Middle School in California. Doris moved back to Missouri in 1941 and entered her freshman year at Mountain Grove High School. Doris graduated from Mountain Grove High School in 1945. On May 6, 1945, Doris was united in marriage to Wayne Moore at the Mountain Valley Church in a double wedding ceremony with Galen Neher and Angilee Moore. They moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where Doris worked at H.D. Lee Mercantile Company and Wayne worked at Union Wire Rope. Around 1950, Doris & Wayne bought the farm on Coke Road from Mose Johnson located eight miles from Mountain Grove. Today, that same farm is where the entire family celebrates special times together. In 1953, Doris started her first job for the Mountain Grove School District and soon became the high school secretary. Each student was special to Doris as she tried to be a mother to all of them. Many of you will recall a special time that Doris helped you and formed a special bond. Doris retired from the Mountain Grove R-3 School District after serving 37 years as secretary-bookkeeper. In the late eighties, Doris & Wayne bought a second home in Blue Springs, Missouri, to be close to Bev, Don and their children. Doris and Wayne had one daughter, Beverly.

Doris enjoyed sewing, embroidery, and quilting. She learned to sketch patterns and sew from her mother, Flossie, who was an excellent tailor. Doris made dozens of baby quilts. Many were donated to area hospitals for infants in need. She made countless tea towels for friends and family. She would drive to Springfield, window shop and sketch dresses then return home and sew the new dresses for Bev and herself to wear to church the very next day. Doris loved to shop for shoes. There were three shoe stores in Springfield that knew Doris by her first name. Wayne used to say that Doris could wear any size, any color shoes, as long as they were cute.

Doris and Wayne were faithful and longtime members of the Mountain Valley Free Will Baptist Church where she was baptized as a teenager. The evening that Doris was saved, she caught a ride home with the Everett & Ermil Moore family. Her future husband, Wayne, was in the car that night. She loved the Lord and enjoyed attending church with her family, friends and neighbors. She taught Sunday school and assisted with many church programs. Many of you will recall her ability to memorize long beautiful readings. In later years, Doris and Wayne also attended church at the Beacon Free Will Baptist Church in Raytown, Missouri. She loved Bible study with her friends.

Besides her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband: Wayne, brother: Bob, great-grandson: Austin, and brothers-in-law: Galen and Darrell, sister-in-law: Angilee.

Doris is survived by her daughter: Beverly Smith and her husband, Don, of Blue Springs, Missouri; grandchildren: Rick Smith and his wife, Mary, of Corydon, Indiana, Marcy Smith Greble and her husband, Mike, of Blue Springs, Missouri; great-grandchildren: Amber Smith Farmer and her husband, Dustin, Rachael, Grant, Zack, and Zaine Smith and Brennan, Blake, Braden and Bryce Greble; great-great twin grandsons: Landon and Chase Farmer; sisters-in-law: Ann Thompson of Springfield, Missouri, and Jean Moore of Mountain Grove, Missouri; brother-in-law: Jerry Moore and his wife, Janice, of Independence, Missouri; sister-in law: Jeanette Smith and her husband, Russell, of Blue Springs, Missouri; many nephews, nieces, other relative and friends who will miss her.

In recent times, Doris had lots of fun with the residents and staff at Autumn Oaks Caring Center in Mountain Grove. Many good stories were shared with her roommate, Dorothy. Doris and her family appreciate the compassionate care provided by Three Rivers Hospice.
