Darrell Ray Newberry

Darrell Ray Newberry, son of the late Charles Ray Newberry and Carolyn (Sellars) Newberry, was born June 25, 1968, in El Dorado, Kansas, and departed this life June 21, 2023, at his home in Mountain Grove, Missouri, surrounded by his family.

Darrell graduated from Mountain Grove High School and attended North AR Community College where he played baseball. He married Dawn Songer on December 28, 1991, in Rogersville, Missouri. Two sons, Garrett and Hayden, were born to this union. He worked various jobs in the Springfield, Missouri, area before he started his long career in refrigeration maintenance.

Family and friends were everything to Darrell and he loved spending time with them. His grandson, Cohen was a major source of happiness for him. As soon as you sat Cohen on Darrell’s lap, his smile went from ear to ear. He had many friends but his inner circle was small. Not many got in but once you were in, you couldn’t get out. When he got together with friends, there was a constant stream of stories, sarcasm, and laughs. You had to have thick skin to hang out with this group. When Darrell said something sarcastic to you, it meant he loved you. He was unapologetically Darrell, no matter who he was talking to.

Darrell loved baseball. He enjoyed teaching kids about baseball and passed on the love of the game to his own children and grandbaby. He had the privilege of buying Co his first Cardinal’s jersey.

Darrell also greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, and anything sports. His happy place was watching for deer in his “mobile tree stand”, AKA, his truck.

Darrell was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was a selfless family man, a man of few words, but a man of great strength. In the last five years that he spent fighting, all of his family got to watch his faith walk grow. That walk allowed his demeanor to soften and joy to fill his heart and soul. Darrell rededicated his life to the Lord and was baptized on March 16, 2023 at Renovation Church in Mansfield, Missouri.

Darrell was preceded in death by his father, Charles “Ray” Newberry, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ronald and Judith Songer, and many other cherished family members that welcomed him home.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Dawn Newberry, his two sons, Garrett Newberry and wife, Meagan, and Hayden Newberry and wife, Allison, one grandson, Cohen Ray Newberry, his mother, Carolyn Newberry, Judy Talbert and son Daniel, and many other relatives and friends who will miss him greatly.
