Billy Joe Austin

November 23, 1931 — October 22, 2024

Mountain Grove

Billy Joe Austin, born on November 23, 1931, in Wright County, Missouri, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2024, in Mountain Grove, Missouri. He held his love for the Lord, family, and friends close to his heart and lived a life devoted to serving Christ and sharing that love with others.

On July 1, 1956, Billy was united in marriage to Dixie Crisp in Manes, Missouri. Three daughters were born to this union: Jennifer, Becky, and Billie.

Bill enjoyed a career working at Brown Shoe Company that spanned over three decades. He later dedicated 15 years to driving a school bus, which shaped the lives of many young people.

Bill served honorably in the United States Navy for four years on active duty, serving as a seaman in the Korean War conflict, and four years in the Navy Reserves. He also left his mark through his years of service with the American Legion, where he volunteered for 31 years and had the honor of holding the American flag during their ceremonies—a reflection of his pride in his service to our nation.

As a man with an appreciation for the outdoors, Bill had a deep love for fishing, coon hunting, waterskiing, and tubing, activities that allowed him to enjoy God’s creation with his family and friends. Bill’s sense of humor could be found in these outdoor adventures. While driving the boat, Bill found immense pleasure in throwing people off the tube.

Bill never met a stranger. He made a point of making everyone feel welcome wherever he went. Throughout the years, many individuals were privileged enough to be given a nickname. Additionally, Bill enjoyed music. He enjoyed singing and playing the guitar, often sharing his musical talent with others.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dixie Austin; his daughters, Becky Moore and Jennifer Broome; one son-in-law, Jim Broome; four sisters; and three brothers.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Billie Miller and her husband, Scott, of Norwood, Missouri; son-in-law, Herb Moore, of Spokane, Missouri; six grandchildren, James Broome and his wife, Heather, Sara McNallen and her husband, Cody, Samantha Beatty and her husband, Devin, Harrison Miller and his wife, Emily, Theodore Miller and his wife, Courtney, and Charlton Miller and his wife, Olivia; and ten great-grandchildren.

Billy Joe Austin’s life was a testament to his love of the Lord, hard work, service, and love for family and friends. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
