Elbert “Bert” Flinton Spurgeon, son of the late Charles Flinton and Goldia Bernice (Sails) Spurgeon, was born on November 27, 1924 in Texas County, Missouri and departed this life on Sunday, June 23, 2013 in the Ozarks Community Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, following an extended illness. He was 88 years, 6 months, and 26 days of age.
Bert grew up on the family farm north of Mtn. Grove, Missouri. He attended Mtn. Grove School and graduated from Mtn. Grove High School in 1943 where he excelled in agriculture classes. Following high school, he served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He served in Italy for two years and was honorably discharged on June 2, 1946.
He was united in marriage to Elsia “Jewell” Hicks on January 31, 1947. They made their home for twenty years on the family farm before moving to Mtn. Grove, Missouri several years ago.
Bert worked on his farm and later became a milk hauler and then a Field Manager for Mid-America Dairy in Cabool, Missouri. He retired from Mid-AM and worked several years for Lynn Hurtt at the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home as a driver.
Bert was a longtime member of the First Free Will Baptist Church in Mtn. Grove. He loved his church and church family very much and served as a Church Trustee. He also served on the Mtn. Grove Christian Academy Board for several years. The Christian Academy was very important to him and he was very thankful that Mtn. Grove had a Christian school, because he felt this was the answer for the area children.
Bert was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and neighbor. He will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Bert liked to hunt, fish and play golf with his family and friends. He just couldn’t find enough time with his busy schedule to enjoy them.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son: David Dane Spurgeon; and by one brother: Rev. Russel Bea Spurgeon.
Bert is survived by his loving wife of over sixty-five years: Jewell Spurgeon of their home; two sons: Thomas Eugene Spurgeon and Patt Satterfield of Springfield, Missouri and James Rodney Spurgeon and his wife, Janie Dean (Rose) Spurgeon of Savannah, Tennessee; a daughter-in-law: Nancy Jo (Jarvie) Spurgeon of Casey, Illinois; one sister-in-law: Margaret “Elaine” (Shorter) Spurgeon-Caskey and her husband, Robert “Bob” Caskey of Mtn.
