Barbara E. Mcgowen

August 12, 1932 — April 6, 2017

Barbara McGowen, daughter of the late Orville and Mae (Brumley) Sutton, was born on August 12, 1932 in Mountain Grove, Missouri, and passed away on April 6, 2017 at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston, Missouri. She was 84 years, 7 months, and 25 days of age.

Barbara grew up in Mountain Grove and graduated from Mountain Grove High School in 1950. She married Bob McGowen on November 11, 1950 in Yellville, Arkansas. For the first two years of their marriage they made their home in Kansas City, Missouri. Two children were born to this union. After Bob was drafted and left for Korea, Barbara moved back to Mountain Grove. When Bob returned from the service, they remained in Mountain Grove to raise their family.

Barbara never took lessons but she learned to play the piano as a young girl. She was an excellent musician and had an exceptional ability to play almost any song she heard. Bob and Barbara loved going to Bluegrass festivals. They played instruments together and would share their music at area events and with other local musicians. They were able to meet many Nashville stars over the years. Barbara had her picture taken with at least a dozen Grand Ole Opry stars.

Barbara loved her family very much and enjoyed being a homemaker. She also loved to cook. She and Bob enjoyed feeding the birds and relaxing with a cup of coffee while they watched the birds come and go. They especially liked watching the humming birds.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Mae Sutton.

She is survived by her loving husband of their home, Bob, one son, Brady McGowen, and one daughter, Bridgette Wade, both of Mountain Grove, seven grandchildren, Cherell Kleinfeld, Brandon McGowen, Nichole McGowen, Devin McGowen, Breanna McGowen, Shawsha Newcomb, and Fawn Wade, seven great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
