Alice Jewel Dowden, daughter of the late Charles and Niza (Cloninger) Allen was born July 8, 1931. She departed this life at her home near Manes on February 14, 2017. She was 85 years, 7 months, and 6 days of age.
Jewel was raised near Lynchburg, Missouri and graduated from Plato High School in 1949, the same year she married Carl Dowden. Four children were born to this union, Connie, Carla, Gene, and Barbara.
Jewel worked at Fort Leonard Wood as a supply clerk for 10 years, working from 1952 to 1957 and again from 1965 to 1969. She was a homemaker and helper with the farm chores the remaining years. She loved her family and had Sunday dinner with those who lived nearby every Sunday. She cooked the meals up until her last year. In earlier years, Jewel loved to sew and quilt. She also raised gardens and canned.
Jewel became a Christian at the age of 12 and was a member of the Lynchburg Baptist Church for most of her life, where she served as pianist and Sunday School teacher. In recent years, she belonged to the Green Mountain Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, Jewel was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Jonathan Privette, two brothers, Marvin and Herbert Allen, and three sisters, Lois Wright, Fern Choquette, and Marjorie Massey.
She is survived by her husband, Carl Dowden of the home, one son, Gene Dowden and wife, Delesa, of Manes, three daughters, Connie Buttram of Manes, Barbara Francis and husband, Charles, of Lebanon, and Carla Long and husband, Steve, of Statesville, North Carolina, ten grandchildren, Landon Buttram and wife, Cheyenne, of Manes, Heather Aldridge, Jennifer Cinkosky, and Daniel Francis of Lebanon, Nathan, Caleb, Lisa, and Cassondra Dowden of Manes, Sherry Privette of Statesville, North Carolina, and Karissa Jaynes of Lebanon, twelve great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and one sister, Thelma Tracy of Plato, Missouri.
Visitation: Friday, February 17, 2017 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
Funeral Service: Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
Burial: Evening Shade Cemetery, Manes, Mo.
